Top New York Restaurant Enhances Sparkle with ClearShield
The fine dining experience at The Modern restaurant in New York City has been enhanced by the ClearShield glass surface renovation and protection system. Approximately 1,800 sq ft of low iron sandblasted glass throughout the restaurant’s interior has been treated by SurfaceCare, a licensed ClearShield applicator in the US specializing in glass restoration.
The Modern is ranked among a small group of New York’s finest restaurants and its contemporary design, inspired by the Bauhaus movement, has earned considerable acclaim as well. Signature elements of The Modern include a luminescent glass wall sweeping diners into the restaurant, a 46-foot marble bar floating above a lighted glass base, and a stunning glass wine wall holding more than 2,200 bottles.
The low iron sandblasted glass ‘walls’ are an integral focal point of the restaurant and are backlit to create additional impact. Virtually colourless, low iron glass offers exceptional clarity and high light transmission, making it an ideal choice for The Modern’s elegant, light-filled dining room. However, if left unprotected the rough surface of sandblasted glass is highly vulnerable to fingerprints and general staining and can be difficult and costly to clean. Using the ClearShield System to renovate and then protect the floor-to-ceiling glass at The Modern has produced dramatic results. The glass has been restored to its original stunning condition and will retain its good looks for longer with minimal maintenance and without the need for harsh chemicals. Indeed, once treated with ClearShield, cleaning frequency is cut, on average, by 50%. A spokesperson for The Modern’s operational management confirmed that they are delighted with the ClearShield glass surface treatment and SurfaceCare’s service, “SurfaceCare has done a remarkable job and displayed great care and professionalism in handling the glass.”

SurfaceCare’s experienced team used ClearShield Sandblast Protect on the interior glass at The Modern, a specialist formulation in the ClearShield range that leaves less residue on the surface and so makes the final application process easier.
The first stage of treatment involved cleaning and restoring the sandblasted glass before applying the surface protection, thereby ensuring an effective, long lasting result. After restoration, ClearShield was simply and safely spray-applied onto the glass in situ. Working like non-stick cookware, ClearShield chemically bonds to the surface providing a durable and transparent barrier, which is chemically inert, non-hazardous, UV stable and won’t peel, crack or flake.
The ClearShield System is a tried and tested technology for the renovation, protection and maintenance for all types of new and existing glass, from building façades to shower doors and marine glass. For further general information about ClearShield,
